Pets in Weddings

W.C. Field's advice not with-standing "Never work with pets or children", many people want their pets to participate in their weddings. After all, they are part of the family and should be included.

To help make pet participation more charming, following these 5 simple guidelines will help avoid chaos and catastrophe.

  1. Know your pet. Is it a "People Pet?" Is it comfortable in crowds? If not, it would be unkind to bring it to the wedding just to show it off.
  2. Know your venue. Not all Churches, restaurants or other wedding venues permit pets. The time to learn this is long before you plan to include the pet in your wedding.
  3. Rehearse, Rehearse, Rehearse. Get the pet used to the space, the items it will carry and the people escorting the pet or helping attach pillows, pouches etc.If they are carrying something, practice with the item but don't attach it until a few moments before the procession. If attached too early a lost or chewed Ring Bearer Pillow or other item can result.
  4. Assign an attendant to the pet who is animal person and can handle it, preferably someone who knows the pet. A stranger, small child or an elderly person is the wrong choice for a 2 year old Lab.
  5. Plan B. Remember, a wedding is about the Bride and Groom. The presence and use of pets in a Wedding Ceremony can be charming but if things don't work out as planned, have another plan. Don't let pet behavior, traffic or weather ruin your wedding.
